Spacestation was designed and built as part of Antony Gormley’s 2007 Blind Light show at the Hayward Gallery in London.
The 22t sculpture is constructed from 356 perforated Corten steel boxes forming a large figure curled into a foetal position.
Tristan Simmonds worked from a conceptual foam model and developed a system for the interactive sculpting of boxes within a 3D body scan of Antony Gormley.
Due to the complex ‘Chinese puzzle’ nature of the engineering and construction Tristan Simmonds developed an innovative system to generate fabrication data and construction sequence information. The boxes were fabricated directly from CNC cut patterns with fabrication and connection instructions directly engraved on the box faces to assist in prefabrication, logistics and the fast assembly on site.
